Seco Canyon Ranch was originally part of the Cebolleta Land Grant issued by the colonial Spanish government in the xxxxs to 30 colonists from the Albuquerque area. Now spelled Seboyeta, the small community was settled in xxxx after a contingent of Navajos went to Santa Fe and agreed to the establishment of a mission on their lands; the site chosen was on the southeast side of Mount Taylor. Following acquisition of the region by the U.S. in xxxx, the area was know as a notorious hangout for Mexican Traders and bandits dealing in slaves, whiskey, and guns and with the increasing conflict between Navajos and settlers prompted the construction of an Army post in the area to control the raiding. The first post was established at Cebolleta in xxxx and was abandoned two years later. Several hundred descendants of the original Land Grantees continue to inhabit the area. Present day Seco Canyon Ranch was deeded to the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad (APRR), at the end of the nineteenth century and was established as a ranch in the xxxx's when the APRR sold the land. The ranch changed hands several times and today is used for cattle and big-game hunting. The Ranch hosts herds of Elk, Mule Deer, and a small herd of wildhorses. The Ranch has a number of two track roads which allow access to 70% of the ranch.The balance of the ranch must be accessed by quad or horseback.
