Extension Horticulture Specialist - (Los Lunas) in Albuquerque, New Mexico For Sale

New Mexico State University seeks to hire a tenure-track, 75%Extension/25% Research position at the Assistant or AssociateProfessor level. Ph.D. required in Horticulture, Plant Sciences, orclosely related field. Applicants should have a strong background in horticulturalscience, especially landscape, ornamental, and nursery plants. Thesuccessful candidate will be responsible for a progressivestatewide extension and research program in horticulture includinglandscape management, plant selection and identification, andlandscape design with special emphasis on water conservation andabiotic plant stress mitigation. The position will be based at the NMSU Agricultural ScienceCenter (ASC) in Los Lunas, NM with statewide responsibilities andjoint appointments in the Extension Plant Sciences Department andthe Plant & Environmental Sciences Department. The Los LunasASC has 200 acres of irrigable land with a wide range of soil typesand both conventional and organic areas, greenhouses andlaboratories, planting/transplanting equipment, storage cold roomand cold frame, incubation/drying facilities, and other samplepreparation equipment, as well as a broad diversity of establishedplant species including introduced and native grasses,annual/perennial forbs, ornamentals, and fruit and pecan treeorchards. The ASC offers excellent opportunities for field-basedresearch and collaboration. In addition, the Los Lunas ASC ishoused with and shares a unique relationship with the USDA PlantMaterials Center that is responsible for developing plants used forrangeland improvement, erosion control, wildlife habitatenhancement, and native plant landscaping. Los Lunas, a village with a population of about 15,000, is a30-minute drive south of Albuquerque, NM's most cosmopolitan city.Housing options in the area range from rural to urban. A commutertrain connects Los Lunas to Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The IsletaPueblo is located north of the village and the Rio Grande is to theeast.
